About 600 kebeles will become beneficiaries of community-based health insurance (CBHI) this fiscal year, according to the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency (EHIA).

CBHI is health insurance that pools members’ premium payments into a collective fund and covers basic health care costs at local health centers when a member is sick.

Ethiopia introduced CBHI schemes in 13 woredas (districts) in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and SNNP regional states in 2012.

About 360 kebeles have so far enrolled and over 4 million beneficiaries have accessed health services.

According to the agency, efforts were underway to extend the schemes to 550-600 kebeles and reach 700,000-1,000,000 beneficiaries this Ethiopian fiscal year. (FBC)
