President SahleworkZewde are becoming more active on her engagement in major social issues that are affecting Ethiopia.

On Friday, She visited children undergoing with cancer treatment at a center located inside Black Lion Specialized Hospital’s premises.

The president office released photos that show her interacting with the children and others around their bed.

After the visit, the President called on all members of the society to play their role in order to address the multifaceted impact and increasing burden of cancer on the community.

The President also appreciated the center’s commitment to provide service with its limited resources and only 42 beds.

The increasing number of cancer patients and supply shortages of cancer medicines are some of the challenges facing the center.

Experts say the growing population coupled with lifestyle changes will mean an increasing burden of cancer. However, oncology services are wholly inadequate—no cancer registry exists, and only one cancer center, with a handful of doctors and nurses, struggles to serve the entire country.

During the past six months alone, close to 700 young cancer patients were registered to get service in the center at the Black Lion Hospital. (Daily Monitor)
