Addis Ababa, February 21, 2019 (FBC) –The Addis Ababa city administration today launched a project to convert river sides of the city into public spaces and green areas at a cost of 29 billion birr

The project, which will be implemented by Varnero PLC, is expected to take three years for completion, it was noted.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Engineer Takele Uma, deputy mayor of Addis Ababa city, said the project, which was initiated by the Prime Minister, is for all Ethiopians and residents of Addis Ababa.

He further said “we will try to make Addis Ababa (meaning new flower in Amharic) live up to its name.

The project is a three-year initiative of  Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed.

The development project will run along the two biggest rivers of Addis Ababa, stretching 23.8kms and 27.5kms respectively all the way from the mountains of Entoto through to Akaki river.

The main objectives of the project are to elevate the city to a site of urban tourism, to enhance the well-being of city dwellers and to enable the country’s aspiration of nurturing a green economy through the expansion of green spaces and creating related service economies
