The Ethiopian Federal High Court in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on Thursday sentenced a Brazilian woman to three months in prison for cocaine smuggling.

The Brazilian woman was accused of trying to smuggle 1.2 kilo grams of cocaine through Addis Ababa International Airport on February 18, 2019.

The accused had departed from the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo and was transiting through Addis Ababa International Airport on way to her final destination in Dakar, Senegal.

The Ethiopian Federal High Court said the Ethiopian Attorney General has provided witnesses, police investigation reports and documents to provide the woman’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Brazilian woman was also handed 2,000 Birr (70 US dollars) fines on top of her three month prison sentence.

Ethiopia has in recent months arrested dozens of foreigners for suspected drug trafficking, mainly transiting through Addis Ababa International Airport while travelling between Latin American destinations and African destinations.
