A traffic accident in Ethiopia’s Tigray regional state, located in the northern part of the country has left 14 people dead, an Ethiopian official said on Wednesday.

Rigbe Tadesse, Chief Traffic Inspector, Ganta Afeshum district in Tigray regional state, said the accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a transport bus with 31 people on board travelling in a mountainous area fell into a ditch deep leaving 14 people dead, reported local media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).

Tadesse further said another 17 passengers who were injured in the traffic accident are currently receiving medical treatment, with police currently conducting investigation into the possible causes of the traffic accident.

Though Ethiopia has one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world, deadly traffic accidents are fairly common, with the blame put on bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of safety rules
